NEW DELHI, Jan. 4—Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Shri Jai Prakash Agarwal, MP said the Congress Party had always given importance to the rights and privileges of the teaching community of Delhi University and promised that no move to hinder their rights would be tolerated. He said the teaching community was society's intellectual conscience whose contribution from freedom struggle till now was unforgettable in Congress Party's many historic struggles and movements. Shri Agarwal said this while addressing over 500 teachers, who included senior professors, deans and principals of various colleges, at Rajiv Bhawan, DPCC office, here today.

The large meeting was organised by the teaching community of Delhi University, affiliated to the Congress Party, to give New Year greetings to DPCC president Shri Jai Prakash Agarwal, as well as to strengthen the bond between the Congress Party and the teaching community.

Shri Agarwal said the Congress-affiliated teaching community in Delhi University had done well in the DUTA elections, and the party was hoping to derive benefits of the DUTA election success in the coming Delhi Assembly elections as well. He assured the teaching community that he will accompany a delegation of the teachers to take up the demands raised by them with the Prime Minister and the Human Resources Development Minister for solution. He said the party forum will be always open to tackle their issues and problems connected with the party as well as service-related matters.

Shri Ashwani Shankar, a member of the DUTA Executive Committee, who moderated the function, threw light on the problems of the teaching community and requested the implementation of the third promotion scheme which the Vajpayee Government had withdrawn, pension scheme for young teachers, and putting the salaries and other perks of the teaching community at par with the Civil Services.

He said a special seminar will be held in February in which the topics of discussions will be the SEZ (Special Economic Zone), Nandigram and the future.

The teachers discussed their problems threadbare with DPCC president Shri Jai Prakash Agarwal and demanded in one voice that the party and the teaching community should discuss important matters from time to time to strengthen the bond between the two. Some teachers also stressed that grass-root level teachers should be given importance in the party and units should be setup in colleges considering the depth and importance of Delhi University.

The teaching community assured that they were prepared to pitch in with their services to strengthen the party and those who work against the interest of the organisation will not be tolerated.

Prominent among those present were Prof. Kashi Ram Sharma, Prof. J.P.Sharma, Shri R.N.Vats, Shri Subhash Mahajan and Shivaji College Managing Committee member Sidharth Mishra. Shri Sanjay Sharma, in his vote of thanks, said the association of the teaching community with the Congress Party was a clear proof that the Congress Party was the greatest well-wisher of the teaching community.
